His research interests include Hydrometallurgy/Solid Minerals Processing, Environmental Pollution/Remediation, Physical Chemistry, Nanotechnology and Industrial Chemistry. In Hydrometallurgy, He focused on the extraction of valuable metals such as nickel, cobalt, tantalum, niobium etc from ores and solid waste using aqueous chemistry, while, in Environmental Pollution and Remediation, and Nanotechnology research, he focused on the development of nano oxides, adsorbents and composite materials including the synthesis, modification, characterization and application of these materials to the remediation of environmental pollutants. He is presently working on the use of nano oxides, combined nanocomposite and advanced oxidation treatment techniques for the removal of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) and endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) (e.g polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalates, organometallic compounds, pesticides, etc) from contaminated drinking water and wastewater. Dr OS Ayanda has published atleast 38 articles in Chemistry and related field.
He has always had a strong commitment to mentoring, training and developing undergraduates and postgraduate students, and he plays a considerable role in facilitating the development of oral and written communication skills vital for a successful career in research.
